2nd XI Report
Cowbridge 2nd XI Captain
A Season of Ups and Downs
After the struggle that was the 2013 season, it was hoped for better things when the 2014 season kicked off in May 2014. The perennial problems of lack of playing members and player availability were again to prove an issue but all in all the 2014 season was one of positives.
Despite only finishing just above the relegation zone the performances of certain players during the season were of considerable encouragement. The likes of Rian Thomas and Sean Rowland performed consistently; along with the likes of Michael Hordley and Ed Hardy. Special mention should be made of Sean who led the way as leading run scorer for the 2nd XI throughout the season notching up his maiden hundred for the Club against Swansea Civil Service.
His efforts, along with those of Rian Thomas, Ian Evans and Darren Van Der Vyver, were the backbone of the side and without their contributions, aided by those of the Captain, the side would not have won the games that it did. This does not detract from the efforts from the bowlers led, as ever, by the consistently accurate John Gilbert. Games were won through a combination of both good bowling and batting but it was disappointing at times that games that ought to have been won, particularly that at Bronwydd, resulted in draws or worse; losses.
Hopefully in 2015 the problems that were encountered previously will have been resolved. No one is denying that attempting to put out a competitive XI each Saturday, week in week out, is a difficult task. However, it is hoped that the Club will have put in place a structure that will mean that this issue is addressed meaning the Club will continue to prosper and the talented juniors the Club has are nurtured and retained.
