Duck Race

A Quacking Start to the Season

A well-supported “duck race” took place along the River Thaw on a fine Friday evening in late April, the day before our opening match of the 2016 season.

Organised by parents of junior players, the event was held to raise funds towards the purchase of replacement mats for the outdoor nets at the Athletic Ground, a project costing in excess of £5,000.

More than 300 plastic ducks started the race at the High Street bridge (by Filco) heading for the finish at the Children's Park bridge behind Waitrose.

After prizes had been awarded, the event raised in excess of £400.

Presentations were made at the Athletic Club, coinciding with a sale of pre-owned cricket clothing, co-ordinated by Elinor Sevenoaks, which raised a further £25 for club funds.

For the record, the first three finishers in the duck race were as follows:

1) Duck number 149 - Owner: Becky Capel

2) Duck number 322 - Owner: Lloyd Murphy

3) Duck number 228 - Owner: Osian Rudy Davies

Grateful thanks go to all who supported the event and to three people in particular who organised and managed the duck race. They are Anthony Isles, David Sims and David's son, Riley.

Thanks go also to Y Bontfaen School for the loan of the ducks and to the owner of an energetic spaniel, which was on hand to retrieve any stray ducks.
