Under 9s Report

Hugh Williams

Team Coach

If results in 2017 are any indication to go by, there are good times ahead for this particular age group.

As a coach, the most important aspect is the development of the skills of each player and his or her understanding of the game and its fundamental tactics. There is no doubt that improvement was seen in abundance when playing sides such as Cardiff, St. Fagans, Penarth, Miskin, Pentyrch and Barry.

The squad played in seven festivals and had one friendly fixture, achieving the following statistics:

Played 24 games, won 18 and lost 6.

Games are played by teams of eight players, batting in pairs with everyone bowling one over in an eight-over game. Each batting innings starts with a credit of 200 runs. A loss of a wicket costs a team five runs while wides and no balls gift the batting side two runs for each infringement. In every one of our games, we finished above our starting point of 200 runs.

When we played against the older players, we proved a match for any team but this side is all about development and whoever turned up on a Sunday morning enjoyed an equal share of the action.

Individual all-round improvement was seen by all who attended the winter indoor nets that are invaluable for development. Team captain, Theo Walker, and Harvey Rees played regularly for the Under 11s in the hard ball version of the game.

Both these boys, along with Will Johnson, Chloe Williams and Joe Phillips, have been nominated for Under 10 County trials.

It would be unfair to single out any individual performances for special mention as all players gave of their best. Instead, it is fitting that all 2017 squad members be listed in no particular order:

Theo Walker, Harvey Rees, Chloe Williams, Will Johnson, Joe Phillips, Ed Johnson, George and Ollie Morgan, Finley Thomas, Lloyd Morris, Osian Bowen, Osian Davies, Freddy Valencia, Dylan Alikhan, Sam Boyce, Trystan Lucas, Dylan and Gethin Fox, Rhodri Davies and Jesse Gill.

We look forward to 2018 with anticipation of another successful campaign and continued development.

I would like to thank particularly the Russell family for their coaching help and also especially Andy Walker for his support in helping to run the festival teams. Thanks go also to all the parents for the support given to their children on Sunday mornings – never an easy day to get out of bed!
