Under 9s Report 2018

Let me start off by saying what a great bunch of children I had the pleasure of coaching in 2018, some being the children of parents that I taught many years ago (NB: that does make me old!).

I admit that we had our differences from time to time with regard to listening, concentration and obedience but overall every one of the squad matured into good players. I was a little disappointed that Bryony Boyce was the only girl in the group but she blended in well and matched the boys for performance.

The pre-season winter nets went well sharing with Sara Russell’s ‘All Stars’ youngsters and proved an enjoyable environment.

Fortunately, the weather was kind to us this year with only one outdoor game and one festival falling foul of bad weather. In all, we competed in 10 Sunday Festivals starting on 13th May.

Venues visited just once were Penarth, Creigiau, Whitchurch and Cardiff with two festivals each at Miskin, Barry and Cowbridge.

In all, the Under 9s played 26 matches, winning 13 and losing 13. Cardiff proved the only team a cut above the rest but when we were able to field our stronger members, the games were quite even.

Trystan Lucas was the only member of the squad to play in all 10 festivals with Alex Anderson and Daniel Thomas both playing in nine. As might be expected, these three became the top run-scorers with Alex ending the season on 143 runs, Trystan 91 and Daniel 90.

The leading wicket taker was Alex with 11, followed by Lloyd Morris on 10 and Ollie and George Morgan with eight wickets apiece.

The 2018 squad comprised 21 players of which eight remain eligible for the Under 9s this year.

2018 Squad members:

Daniel Thomas, Lloyd Morris, Alex Anderson, Trystan Lucas, Reuben Davies, Cyffin Tudno Flay, Ollie Morgan, Kieran Boon, Ollie Saxton, Osian Rowe, Nye Chamberlin, Dan Molony,

George Morgan, Dylan Alikhan, Osian Davies, Ed Johnson, Bryony Boyce, Alex Clarke, Charlie Earn show, Henry Powell, Macsen Williams.

I would like to thank all parents for the support they give to the children, the Club and I thank you also for your generous gifts. The Titleist AVX golf balls helped me secure a winning round and a Cup on the second occasion that they were used. I celebrated with the wine, but not for long, as I lost a shot due to my handicap.

Thanks go to all of the individuals who helped me either on training afternoons or Sunday mornings. I must single out just one person for special mention - Ian Lucas - who scored for the team in all of the festivals – diolch yn fawr iawn.

I look forward greatly to consolidating the relationship with parents and players during the 2019 season and hope to see Cowbridge Cricket Club continue to flourish at junior level.
