The 2nd XI finished sixth out of ten teams in SWCA Division 5 which was slightly disappointing. On a more positive note, 2018 gave us a glorious summer and we enjoyed some great cricket.

The prospects for the season looked promising with the arrival of hard-hitting Jonny Napier. However, as a serving paratrooper, Jonny regrettably missed a lot of the games due to overseas training commitments.

It is pleasing to note that there were always three or four young players in the side and most often these were Will Harris, a reliable swing bowler; Heath Webb, who has all the makings of a 1st XI opening bowler; Lewis Sevenoaks, an all-rounder who hits the ball hard; and Owain Scholey, a precocious talent who bowls leg breaks.

Of the older players, both John Gilbert and Mike Bird sustained early season injuries, Gareth John was injured for much of the campaign and Umar Rafique needed an elbow operation. At the risk of this report seeming like a medical bulletin, it was the case that Ian Evans and Guy Parker bucked the trend but then they both bowl off a gentle two or three paces!

Like the 1st XI, the team’s openers were the team’s leading batsmen with the ever-reliable David Gascoyne and the pugnacious Jonty Webb scoring over a thousand runs between them. Sami Kahn, Alistair Lawson and Andrew Walker, who joined during the season, all provided more than useful support. There is a need to publicly acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Anthony Isles, David Webb, John Brazier and Isaac Owen in making themselves available for last minute call-ups.

We must thank also the ladies and their partners who helped out with the teas. In no particular order, these were Pam Lawson, Nonie Gilbert, Liza Webb, Elinor Sevenoaks, Ian and Fiona Harris, David and Mary Webb and Ian and Alison Evans.

Huge thanks go also to Hugh Williams who once again performed a sterling job in looking after the ground and preparing fine, even wickets for our matches.

Finally, in 2018, Jeffrey Davies completed fifty years of scoring for the Club, mostly for the 2nd XI. Jeff began scoring when his father, Francis, was a player and cannot recall missing more than half-a-dozen games in his career. Jeff has been an integral part of Cowbridge Cricket Club for as long as anyone can remember. Long may he continue to be so.
