2016 Junior Presentation Evening
As the 2016 season came to an end, it was intended to have a festival week of cricket to finish the season, which included all the junior teams and senior T 20 team. Due to prolonged holidays and lack of opposition the U11 and U13 teams went without games.
On Wednesday evening the Senior T20 team had a convincing win against Barry West End by 75 runs. The youngsters of the 1st XI batted in the top 6 with Rian Thomas leading the way with a retired 35 followed by Tom Harper. A quick fire 27 by Andy Harrison and a steady 21 by Matthew Keating posted a total of 176 for 6. In reply B. Collins 36 and A. Fenton 13 gave a promising start, but wickets fell regularly with a brace of wickets each going to Rian, Tom, Matthew Harper and David Kendrick with the visitors all out for 101.
On Thursday it was the turn of the U15’s to play a 16 over match against local rivals The Vale. Cowbridge batted first and Captain Sam Russell showed the way with a quick retired 20 followed by Harry Treharne 20 not out and Matt Pursey not out 15 in a total of 92 for 5. In reply, steady bowling by the home team restricted the visitors to 85 for 6. Tom Wood gained his first wicket for the club in the last over of an exciting match that saw Cowbridge win by 7 runs.
Congratulations to Sam Russell and his team for winning the Cardiff and Vale Junior U15’s “B” League having been unbeaten in 7 games. The team now plays Lisvane in the playoff final for the Peter Hardwick Cup in Lisvane on Sunday 11th September at 4.00 pm.
On Friday prior to the Presentation Evening the U 9’s played an exhibition soft ball match against the U15’s due again to the withdrawal of a local team. Heavily restricted the U15’s lost the game by 7 runs. Captain Theo Walker and team members Finley Thomas, Emrys Ireland, Lloyd Morris Carys Rendell, Harvey Rees, Osian Bowen, Joseph Phillips,Finley Hart and Lloyd Murphy were overjoyed by the result.
At the Presentations the following awards were handed out by the various coaches to recipients of “Player of the Year” and “Most Improved”. All team members received a club medallion.

U15’S LIFT THE COUNTY CUP
The delightful picturesque Lisvane C.C. was the venue of the Cardiff and Vale U 15’s League Cup finals. The “A” league final was between the host club and Penarth where Lisvane won comfortably. Cowbridge also played the host team in the “ B“ final for the Peter Hardwick Cup.
Put into bat on a sunny Sunday afternoon the Cowbridge openers of Captain Sam Russell and young Harry Treharne put on a stand of 37 in good time. Sam was the first to lose his wicket caught at deep mid on for 21. Harry took over the mantle of scoring quick runs with partner Quinn Silk and retired not out 30. In fact Harry has been not out 31, 22 and today 30 since being promoted from the U 13’s to open for the older age group. Quinn and young Heath Webb put on a useful partnership of 30 before the former was bowled for 13. Harry Donethorne joined Heath to continue the striking with Heath eventually caught out for 15 runs. Sam Duscombe joined Harry 16n.o. to finish the innings on 132 for 3 in the 20 allocated overs.
Lisvane had no answer to the pace of opening bowlers Sam and Quinn with the former taking a wicket with his first ball and another in his second. Quinn likewise took one in his second over but the introduction of Heath Webb who bowled a double wicket maiden in his first over put paid to any Lisvane resistance. Evan Price took a wicket with his first ball as did Sian Russell who also got another in that over. On came Ben Morgan to finish the innings with Lisvane all out for 22 runs and 110 run loss.
Congratulations to the whole team for keeping their best performance to last in an undefeated season of 9 games. A special mention goes to Sam Russell for captaining the side with so much maturity for a youngster. He tried to involve all the players in all the games which is quite difficult to achieve.

UNDER 13 SIX A SIDE LEAGUE
Even though the 2016 cricket season has come to an end outdoors, the U13's team of the Club continue to play in a Six A Side format indoor competition. The team has been entered in the Cardiff and Vale indoor league held at the SWALEC Stadium on Wednesday evenings. There will be 7 rounds of matches with the top 2 playing in the final. All team members bowl 2 overs each making it a 10 over match.
In the first match on Wednesday 14th September, Cowbridge were drawn against the strong Radyr team who batted first and were all out for 76 runs in the tenth over. In reply Cowbridge could only reach 47 for 5 in the allotted overs. This format of playing is a new experience to the boys; who will only improve as matches are played.

Ben Wright, an ex Glamorgan player who had previously come through the ranks of the club scored 1122 runs for Cowbridge this year at an average of 93.5. This can only be done through parental support and dedication of the coaches. He went on to thank the helpers and coaches of various groups and thanked Sarah Russell for her outstanding work as Junior Coordinator. She along with daughter Sian and son Sam, assisted by Ben Wright, ran the successful Under 8’s All Stars section on Friday evenings.
