There was a splendid occasion at Cowbridge Cricket Club during the tea interval of the Gowerton game as vice-presidents, long-serving members and friends gathered at the club for the official opening of the new electronic scoreboard.
Earlier in the year the club had mourned the passing away of John Bevan. He was a life member and long-serving player who had played for the club from 1957 through to 1983 and captained for two years.
He took over 1,000 wickets bowling seam up mainly from the Bear Field end. In his memory, the JB scoreboard was erected and financed by his great friend and playing colleague, Gerald Leeke, and the Bevan family, mainly daughter Debbie and son Martyn.
President Jeff Bird and chairman Hugh Williams welcomed a host of guests and friends to this special occasion. The opening of the scoreboard was followed by the presentation of a memorial bench donated by the Bevan family.
The bench took pride of place on the ‘Mound’ overlooking the ground that JB loved. This was followed by a delightful and deliciously-prepared tea, and following this the large crowd enjoyed the fortunes of the first XI on the playing field, a fitting result for JB who brought much success to our cricket teams over the years.
